What’s Floortime?
Floortime is all about play and was created by Dr. Stanley Greenspan. It’s a therapeutic approach that highlights emotional engagement and building relationships between the child and their caregiver or therapist. The idea behind floortime is pretty simple: kids learn best when they’re involved in things they like. This method means getting down to the child’s level, both physically and emotionally, to interact in a way that suits their unique needs and preferences. The Key Principles of Floortime are:
1. Child-Centered: The child gets to lead the play and pick activities they enjoy, which helps them engage naturally.
2. Emotional Connections: Building strong bonds through play boosts trust and communication—key ingredients for growth.
3. Developmental Milestones: Therapists use play to focus on important skills like emotional regulation, language, and social skills.
What’s Music Therapy?
Music therapy is all about using music to help with individual needs and goals. For children with autism, ADHD, and disabilities, music therapy can really boost communication skills and social interaction (see National Clearinghouse on Autism “music mediated intervention” section). Music therapists create fun sessions that may include singing, playing instruments, songwriting, and listening activities designed to connect and benefit the kids as a whole.
Mixing Floortime and Music Therapy
Combining floortime with music therapy creates a powerful approach that’s tailored to meet the different needs of autistic, ADHD, and disabled kids. This mix creates an environment where children feel understood, engaged, and supported to explore who they are.
The Environment of Therapy
It’s super important to create a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment for floortime and music therapy to work effectively. Our space is great for exploring! We have a variety of instruments and materials for kids to check out. We create a space where kids can express themselves freely and explore their interests at their own pace.
Conclusion
Music therapy has a massive potential for supporting autistic, ADHD, and disabled kids. By building emotional connections, boosting communication, and encouraging social skills through personalized experiences, we can help these kids in a holistic way that works with their individual differences. As a provider of these therapy services, I’m excited about creating an environment where every child can shine, unlocking their potential through the joy of play and music. Together, we can pave the way for brighter futures, one fun session at a time.
