Discovering a New Way to Connect
In my work as a music therapist, I’ve seen how music can open doors where words sometimes cannot. One student who stands out is a non-speaking child with apraxia who uses a letter board to communicate. Typing more than a few letters in a session was a challenge, often leaving him frustrated and limited in expression.
Turning Challenges into Creative Expression
To help him communicate and create, we embraced improvisational music therapy. I improvised on piano and hand drums while he brought in lyrics he had typed at home. He would indicate “yes” or “no” to show if the music matched what he had in mind. Sometimes, he even wrote his own lyrics for me to set to music and sing over—turning our sessions into a true collaboration.
It all came together during one unforgettable session. He typed, “He is a good musician!”—a simple phrase, yet it carried a powerful message of recognition, connection, and pride. Using his lyrics, I had written a song, and together we refined it through improvisation. That moment crystallized everything: his voice, his creativity, and our shared connection through music.
The Impact: Building Confidence and Connection
This approach led to multiple moments of meaningful connection. The student grew more confident and comfortable, both in our sessions and in using his AAC device and letter board. Music became a shared language, helping him express himself in ways typing alone could not.
Conclusion: Embracing Creativity in Communication
This journey reinforced that communication is more than words. Through music, we found a bridge to creativity, connection, and self-expression. It’s a reminder that collaboration and adaptability can open doors for children with unique needs—and that every small victory matters.
